The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, (also called Bwindi National Park) is one of the most famous national parks in Uganda.
Location: The national park is spread over an area of about 320 km² and is located in the southwest of Uganda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It lies at an altitude of about 1,200 to 2,600 meters.
Vegetation: The park is characterized by its impenetrable vegetation, which also gives it its name "Impenetrable". The landscape is characterized by steep slopes, deep valleys and dense rainforest. The vegetation ranges from evergreen forests to bamboo groves and a diverse plant life.
Biodiversity: The forest is home to numerous animal species. There are hundreds of bird species, some even endemic, butterflies, reptiles and a variety of primate species such as chimpanzees or mute monkeys. But the national park is best known for its large population of mountain gorillas.
Mountain gorillas: About half of the world's population of mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The animals live on the slopes of the dense forests and here you have the unique opportunity to observe the animals in their natural habitat during a gorilla trekking.
Conservation and Tourism: Bwindi National Park is a protected area and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. The conservation of biodiversity, especially the mountain gorillas, is a priority here. Therefore, visitor numbers are also strongly controlled and regulated, so that only a maximum of 8 tourists per day can visit a gorilla family.
