General Information
Imposing volcanic peaks and rainforests in the northwest and dry savannah landscapes in the southeast make Rwanda a sought-after travel destination. Also known as the land of 1,000 hills, Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in East Africa. Densely populated, Rwanda has a remarkable population of about 12.6 million. The capital Kigali, located in the heart of the country, is considered the cultural and economic centre. Characterized by expansion, the lively city of over a million inhabitants is only about two hours drive from the national parks. Whether Gorilla trekking or game drives on the tracks of the Big Five: Rwanda impresses with unique nature experiences. As one of the few states in Africa, it also has its own native language, the widely spoken Kinyarwanda. Many Rwandans also speak English and French.
Climate and best time to travek
Located close to the equator, Rwanda offers a tropical highland climate with daily average temperatures of around 25° Celsius. Humid and mild could describe the year-round prevailing weather in simple words. The great differences in altitude between the various regions sometimes make for considerable temperature differences. In general, the long dry season from May to October is considered the best time to travel. The short dry season from December to March is also suitable for active travel. During the rainy seasons between March and May and October and December, heavy rainfall is likely. Although it usually rains every day during this time of year, the sun always peeks out between the showers. The Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda is considered particularly rainy.
Destinations and activities
Besides the young capital Kigali, the national parks in the northwest and southeast of Rwanda are especially popular. In the Volcanoes National Park at the foot of volcanic peaks over 4,000 meters high, luxurious lodges attract guests from all over the world. Around a third of the world's gorilla population is based here. It is also the former home of the renowned Gorilla-researcher Diane Fossey and can be visited in the national park. Extensive hiking and mountain biking to the top of the volcanic craters are possible, as well as visits to the small villages and communities. The Nyungwe National Park in southwestern Rwanda is something like the country's water reservoir. Exotic plants are as much at home here as chimpanzees, reptiles and rare bird species. The Akagera National Park in the dry savannah region presents itself as a less crowded alternative to Serengeti National Park. Thanks to successful reintroduction projects, animal lovers can even experience the famous Big Five here.
The capital Kigali
The capital city of Kigali, located in the centre of Rwanda, has about 1.3 million inhabitants. In addition to its hilly location at around 1,645 meters, the modern metropolis is characterized by its contemporary architecture. The Kigali Convention Center, for example, with its colourfully illuminated domed roof, is a real sight to see. The tallest building in the country is the 20-story Kigali City Tower. The university city of Kigali has a long-standing partnership with Mainz on the Rhine. In the former presidential residence outside the city centre, the Rwanda Art Museum displays historically relevant exhibits. In addition to various art galleries, small boutiques and large shopping centres invite visitors to enjoy shopping. Kigali is not only considered one of the cleanest cities in Africa but also the central transportation hub of Rwanda. International guests currently reach Rwanda via Kigali International Airport. In 2022, this was to be replaced by Bugesera International Airport, which is located about 50 km to the south.
