Geographic Location and Landscape

Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda, near the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering approximately 160 km², it is part of the Virunga volcanic range, which consists of both extinct and active volcanoes. The five major peaks include the imposing Mount Karisimbi (4,507 m) and Mount Bisoke, known for its stunning crater lake. The landscape is characterized by dense bamboo forests, misty montane forests, and open moorlands – a natural paradise that transforms with elevation and season.

History and Significance

Volcanoes National Park is not only an impressive nature reserve but also a historically significant site. Established in 1925 as one of Africa’s first protected areas, it was created to safeguard the endangered mountain gorillas. The park gained international recognition through the work of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, who lived here for years and laid the foundation for gorilla conservation. Her moving story was immortalized in the film Gorillas in the Mist. Today, the park plays a crucial role in conservation and sustainable tourism in Rwanda – every visit contributes to the preservation of this unique ecosystem.

Flora and Fauna

The park’s vegetation is incredibly diverse. While the lower regions are dominated by dense bamboo forests, higher elevations feature moss-covered cloud forests and alpine meadows. These varied ecosystems provide a habitat for an astonishing array of wildlife. The park is world-famous for its gentle giants – the mountain gorillas. However, other fascinating species also call it home, including the rare golden monkeys, forest elephants, giant forest hogs, a
